New Nurse / Nursing Student Essentials
June 14, 2020
Being a nurse can be a very challenging yet rewarding career. I have personally learned so much throughout my nursing career that has changed me for the better. I wanted to share the top things you should buy as a new nurse / nursing student.
1) Stethoscope with holder
For stethoscopes, I recommend the Littmann Stethoscope and a stethoscope holder to go along with it.
It would also be a good idea to purchase a Stethoscope Identification Tag. It’s very easy to set down your Stethoscope and someone else grab it thinking its their own.
2) Organizer kit
- I always used an organizer kit while working. It would hold my pens, penlight, alcohol swabs, medical scissors
- For pens, I loved using the 4 colored ball point pens.
- I found penlights with pupil gauges to be very helpful.
- I also found that medical scissors were an absolute necessity at the bedside.
3) Small notepad
I had a small notepad that I would keep in my other scrub pocket with important notes and to take notes if needed.
4) Clipboard storage box
I used a clipboard storage box to keep all of my important documents during my shift.
5) Comfortable shoes & Compression socks
One of my biggest complaints post shift was definitely foot and leg pain. You spend 12 hours (or longer) on your feet and you definitely feel that afterwards. I would recommend investing in comfortable shoes and compression stockings.
a) I personally used sketchers memory foam shoes and they were life saver for me
b) Compression socks improve circulation that can help reduce foot / leg pain and help prevent leg swelling and varicose veins.
6) Waterproof watch
I bought a cheap waterproof watch with military time to use during my shifts. But if you can afford it, you can use an apple watch.
7) Scrubs
For scrubs, I bought different types but I only loved using the ones with multiple scrub pockets. It makes it very convenient during shifts.
8) Badge ID reference cards
I bought badge ID reference cards: One for pediatrics and one for labs to put behind my ID and these were very helpful. I always had access to them during clinicals so I highly recommend it.
You can always change your badge holder to something cute and personalized.
I also used sharpies attached to my badge.
9) Study reference guides & Planner
I also recommend investing in study reference cards and planner to stay on top of deadlines and keep everything organized.
